Recession got you down? Want to run your own show?
Millions of Americans are out of work. Others are feeling overworked and are remaining in jobs they hate because they need health benefits and a paycheck. Some recent college graduates are finding hard to land their first job due to the recession. It is a tough time to find employment in many fields right now.
Some people who have lost their jobs or who are out of work are deciding to take the entrepreneurial leap and start their own business. Starting a business is never easy, but for some people the idea of being their own boss and growing their own venture is quite appealing.
Over the years, I have coached a large number of people through the business building process. I think they seek me out because I have started a few successful businesses of my own and besides working as a psychotherapist, I have done a fair amount of working as a marketing consultant. Recently, a lot of people who want to be their own boss have called me for some help.
Typically, these entrepreneurs need guidance from attorneys, accountants, access to capital, focus, energy, resiliency and a sound business plan. They also seem to need the same kind of emotional support, motivation and focus which many of the athletes I have coached need in order to succeed at their sport.
Having regular contact or meetings with a mentor who has some business experience or who has succeeded in the industry they are pursuing can also be quite helpful.
Some entrepreneurs network with other business people at trade association meetings, courses and support group.
Entrepreneurs also need some support, courage and encouragement as they encounter the trials and tribulations of starting one's own business. Some time ago, I wrote a book which dealt with entrepreneurship. The book included this inspirational message prior to the first chapter. If you are in your business or thinking of starting your own company, you might enjoy this message.
It was written by Theodore Roosevelt
The credit belongs to the man
who is actually in the arena,
who strives valiantly
who knows the great
enthusiasms,
the great devotions...
and spends himself
in a worthy cause,
who at the best,
knows the triumph
of high achievement;
and who at the worst,
if he fails...at least he fails
while daring, greatly,
so that his place shall never
be with cold and timid souls
who know neither
victory or defeat.
